COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team finished day one of its two-day dual meet against Big Ten rival Penn State Friday at the McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion. The Nittany Lions have a 91-73 lead over the Buckeyes.
“We compete tough tonight, but swam a little too conservative,” Bill Dorenkott, head women’s swimming coach, said. “We have great athletes on this team and we have to just trust our training. I truly believe this team is destined for big things. We better be ready to go tomorrow because it is always tough racing in the Big Ten.”
Leading Ohio State on day one of competition was sophomore Samantha Cheverton, junior Jill Lockhart and senior Griet Buelens, who each earned a win on the evening.
Cheverton’s win came in the 200 freestyle when she swam a career-best time of 1:48.35. Team co-captain Lockhart picked up a win in the 200 backstroke, her third of the season in the race, with a time of 2:02.55. Buelens, also a team co-captain, swam a season-best time of 2:00.95 to earn first in the 200 butterfly.
Also picking up a win for Ohio State was sophomore diver Kristen Asman. The Columbus product won the one-meter competition with a score of 280.55 points.
