COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s swimming team will compete on the road Tuesday in a 5 p.m. meet against Cleveland State at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. The meet will be a co-ed dual meet with the Ohio State and Cleveland State men’s teams.
The Buckeyes will have had 11 days off from their last competition, a 146-112 win over Cincinnati that improved their record to 2-0 this season. First-year Ohio State coach Bill Dorenkott’s team opened the season with a 160-82 win over Kenyon. Dorenkott and the team are looking forward to the meet.
“Traveling to away meets is a great opportunity to build team unity and to have some fun,” Dorenkott said after a recent practice. “We’re looking forward to the meet and for the opportunity to swim in a fast pool away from our own McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.”
Dorenkott Returns to Cleveland
Coach Bill Dorenkott is returning as a coach to his alma mater. A 1991 Cleveland State graduate, Dorenkott was a team captain and multi-event conference champion for coach Wally Morton, who is in his 28th season as the Vikings’ men’s coach. He is in his second season as the school’s women’s coach.
CSU’s Morton on Ohio State/Dorenkott
“Ohio State is always one of the highlights of our schedule and this year it is even more special as we welcome back Buckeye swimming coach Bill Dorenkott (CSU Class of 1991). Bill was a great swimmer at Cleveland State and is one of the top young coaches in college swimming. He is in his first year at OSU after coaching at Penn State (three Big Ten Championships) and Ashland University. We are very proud of his success.”
The Vikings are 6-4
The women’s team improved its dual record to 6-4 with a three-team sweep over Gannon, City College and Notre Dame College at the City College Championship.
No Diving Allowed
The diving team will not compete in Cleveland. The divers competed in a three-day event last weekend at the site of the 2009 men’s and women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving championships: Texas A&M’s Student Recreation Natatorium. Two Buckeyes sophomores Kristen Asman and Katie Bell competed on all three boards. Asman came away a sixth-place finish on platform (229.35 points), and 11th- and 20thplace efforts on the one- and three-meter boards, respectively, with 241.95 and 221.35 points. Bell was ninth on platform (208.95 points), 10th with 256.95 points on the three-meter board and 21st on the one-meter (210.35).
Davis and Alvarez to Red-shirt 2008-09 Season
Senior Chelsea Davis, the 2008 NCAA three-meter diving champion and sophomore Bianca Alvarez, the NCAA runner-up to Davis, will each be red-shirting the 2008-09 season.
In April, Bill Dorenkott was named the head coach of the Ohio State women’s swimming program. He coached the Penn State women’s team for the past 10 years and its men’s team for seven years. His Penn State women won Big Ten Conference championships in 2002, 2005 and 2006. Wally Morton is 248-135-1 in his 28th season as Viking men’s coach and 10-14 in his second season as the school’s women’s coach.
