COLUMBUS, Ohio Three times in the past three years Ohio State captain Ashley Bowyer has spent a week in the spring as an invite to a United States soccer training camp to practice and compete with the best soccer players in her age group. Next week, Bowyer will take a major step beyond the training camps as she heads to Ireland to compete with the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team on its Northern Ireland and Ireland Tour.

Bowyer, and 17 other teammates, will travel to Ireland from May 11-19 where the USA will play the Women’s National Teams of the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on May 13 and Northern Ireland in Belfast on May 15.

“This is an excellent opportunity for Ashley as she is a part of a select pool of college players at the U-23 age,” Ohio State coach Lori Walker said. “These players are the future of the U.S. women’s national team and the Women’s Professional Soccer League, which began play last month.”

Bowyer, a midfielder from Aliso Viejo, Calif., and who will be a senior this fall for Walker’s Buckeyes, made the team after competing the week of April 11-19 in Portland, Ore., at the U.S. Under-23 training camp. The camp was under the direction of Bill Irwin, Portland’s Director of Soccer and men’s head coach, and who also will coach the U-23 Women’s National Team.

The training camp was assembled with the best college players in the country and included matches against the University of Portland, Oregon State and the University of Washington.  The game against Washington was played at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.

Bowyer’s strong play at the training camp secured her spot on the U-23 team, something that did not surprise Walker.

“Ashley has emerged this winter as a stronger vocal leader and her game has a calm, confident presence to it,” Walker said. “She is playing quickly and making great decisions in the final third of the field.  She is both healthy and extremely fit.”

The U.S. team will be based in Belfast, but will travel to Dublin for the match against the Republic of Ireland. The team is comprised of the following individuals:
