COLUMBUS, Ohio – Letecia Wright cruised to a first-place time of 13.59 in the 100m hurdle preliminaries Friday night at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, highlighting the Buckeyes’ first day of competition.
Wright, the reigning Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week, will be one of the favorites in tomorrow’s final race, along with Michigan junior Charnee Lumbus, who finished second-place 13.75. Buckeye All-American Christina Manning just missed qualification for the finals, finishing ninth in 14.01.
Ohio State’s 4x400m relay team of Latoya Sanderson, Ashley Caldwell, Nyjah Cousar and Shaniqua McGinnis turned in a solid performance in the event’s preliminary race, qualifying second in 3:40.10. The Buckeyes were the lone team to qualify out of their heat, as OSU bested Indiana State (3:41.45). Mississippi used a Top 20 national time of 3:36.57 to take the top spot headed into Saturday’s run for the title.
Caldwell also enjoyed some individual success Friday, finishing seventh in the 800m run finals with a time of 2:12.51, the third-best time of her career. Kansas State freshman Sara Stoakes won the race in 2:06.15, ninth nationally.
Ohio State returns to the track at Drake tomorrow at approximately 10:30 a.m. ET.
