COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (10-13 overall, 1-10 Big Ten) fell to 20th-ranked Purdue (18-5, 7-4), 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) Friday night in Holloway Gymnasium. Buckeye Katie Dull scored a team-high 15.5 points with Kristen Dozier adding 11.5. Dull had 14 kills, a solo block and an assist block with Dozier adding 11 kills, and an assist block. Purdue’s Danita Merlau posted a match-high 16 points with 15 kills and an ace serve. Stephanie Lynch had 13.5 points for the Boilermakers with 11 kills, an ace serve and three assist blocks.

After eight ties in set one, the score was 8-8. Kills from Merlau and Lynch gave Purdue a 10-8 lead. Trailing, 14-12, a Dozier kill cut the Purdue lead to one at 14-13. The Boilermakers, with two OSU errors, a Merlau kill and a Kelli Miller ace serve, took an 18-13 lead. Purdue reached set point at 24-17 with a Carrie Gurnell kill. A Kaila Calhoun kill stopped the set point at 24-18. The Boilermakers won the set, 25-18, with a Kristen Arthurs kill. Purdue hit .583 in the set to .423 for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State opened set two with a Dull-Dozier block and a Purdue error for a 2-0 lead. Two OSU errors tied the set at two. At three-all, a Purdue error gave the Buckeyes a 4-3 lead. The Boilermakers tied the set at four with a Jaclyn Hart-Lynch block. A Merlau ace serve, an OSU error and a Hart-Lynch block opened a 7-4 Purdue lead. At 18-15, Ohio State closed to within one (18-17) with kills from Calhoun and Dull. Purdue responded with an Arthurs kill and two from Merlau to take a 21-17 lead. At 23-19, Purdue reached set point at 24-19 with a Lisa Pierce ace serve. Ohio State stopped three set points with a Dull kill and two Purdue errors to make the score, 24-22. A Hart kill ended the set at 25-22 to give the Boilermakers a 2-0 lead in the match. Purdue hit .139 for the set to .179 for the Buckeyes.

A Dull kill opened set three to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead. After five lead changes and 16 ties, the set was tied at 16. Purdue, with two kills from Lynch, a Gurnell-Lynch block and a Merlau kill gave the Boilermakers a 20-16 lead. A Dull kill made it 20-17. A Gurnell kill and solo block and two Buckeye errors made it match point at 24-17. The Buckeyes, with a Kelli Barhorst solo block stopped the match point at 24-18. Purdue, with a Gurnell kill, closed out the set at 25-18 for a 3-0 Boilermaker win. Purdue hit .471 in the set to .167 for Ohio State.

In the match, Purdue hit .372 to .238 for Ohio State. The Boilermakers had a 46-41 advantage in kills and a five-to-one margin in ace serves. Ohio State gave up six service errors to five for Purdue. Defensively, the Boilermakers had a 34-30 edge in digs with Jessica Ullrich and Emily Ehlers sharing match-high honors with nine each for Purdue. At the net, the Boilermakers had a six-to-four edge in team blocks. Purdue’s Lynch (0-3) and Gurnell (2-1) shared match-high honors with three blocks each. Boilermaker Hart posted a match-high 32 assists in the match. OSU’s Betsy Hone posted 25 assists with Ashley Hughes adding 12.

Ohio State continues on the road Saturday at Illinois in a 7 p.m. match.
