COLUMBUS, Ohio – The OhioState (12-12 overall, 6-9 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team lost a 3-0 (31-29, 30-24, 30-23) decision at MichiganState (16-11, 7-8) Friday night in Jenison Field House. Buckeye Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) had a team-high 12 points for OhioState with nine kills, an ace serve, a solo block and two assists. MichiganState’s Katie Johnson recorded a match-high 21.5 points for the Spartans with 20 kills, an ace serve and an assist block.


MichiganState broke a 3-3 tie in game one with a Johnson kill. A Vanessa King kill, an OSU error and a Johnson kill expanded the lead to 7-3. The Spartans held the lead at 28-24 before an Anna Szerszen (So., Conflans Ste Hne, France) kill and two Spartan errors cut the lead to one at 28-27. An Ashley Schatzle kill set the game point for MichiganState at 29-27. An OSU kill by Kristi Hunter (Fr., Roblin, Manitoba, Canada) and a Spartan error tied the game at 29. A Buckeye error gave MichiganState a 30-29 lead and serving a second game point. The Spartans won the game, 31-29, with a Jenilee Rathje kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. In the game, OhioState hit .286 to .235 for the Spartans.


Game two saw four lead changes and 10 ties, the last coming at 13-all. A Schatzle kill and an OSU error gave the Spartans at 15-13 lead. MichiganState held the lead and reached game point at 29-22 with a Schatzle kill. Buckeye kills from Meyer and Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) stopped two game points to cut the margin to 29-24. A Rathje kill closed out the game at 30-24 to give Michigan State a 2-0 lead in the match. The Spartans hit .465 in the game to .308 for OhioState.


OhioState opened game three with a 2-0 lead off a Spartan error and a Hunter kill. A Buckeye error, a Spartan error and a kill from McCarthy gave the Buckeyes a 4-1 lead. OhioState held the lead at 16-14 when two Schatzle kills tied the game at 16. Tied at 18, Spartan kills from Jessica Hohl, Rathje, and Johnson opened a 21-18 MichiganState lead. The Spartans maintained the lead reaching match point at 29-23 with a Schatzle kill. An OSU error ended the game at 30-23, to give the Spartans a 3-0 victory. MichiganState hit .340 for the game to .125 for the Buckeyes.


MichiganState hit .340 for the match to .240 for the Buckeyes. The Spartans had a 71-39 margin in kills and a 2-1 edge in ace serves. MichiganState gave up 11 service errors to seven for OhioState. MSU had a 58-36 margin in digs with Miken Trogdon recording a match-high 22 for the Spartans. OhioState had an eight to five edge in team blocks. OSU’s McCarthy (one solo, four assists) and MSU’s King (five assists) shared match-high honors with five total blocks each. At setter, Lauren O’Reilly posted a match-high 56 assists with OSU’s McCarthy recording 28.


OhioState continues on the road to face Northwestern Saturday.
