COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (10-8 overall, 4-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad extended No. 1 Penn State (21-1, 11-0) to four games Wednesday night in St. John Arena. The Nittany Lions came away with a 15-6, 15-12, 15-17, 15-4 victory for its 21st consecutive win of the season. The game three loss was only the sixth time this season that the Nittany Lions have not swept its opponent. Penn State was led by Lauren Cacciamani with 25 kills, 15 digs and 14 blocks (six solo, eight assists) and Katie Schumacher with 22 kills. Ohio State’s Jen Flynn had a career-high 23 kills and added 18 digs, while Rosie Snow collected 19 kills and 18 digs. OSU’s Sue Calligaris had a career-high 14 kills, adding six assist blocks while Suzie Stiling had 15 kills and a career-high 19 digs. Buckeye setter Katie Virtue set a career-high with 74 assists.

Penn State opened game with the first six points of the match. The Buckeyes closed to 8-4 but two OSU errors put the Nittany Lions up 10-4. A Rosie Snow kill for Ohio State made it 10-5 for PSU but tree OSU errors and a kill by Amanda Rome made it game point at 14-5. A Penn State error cut the lead to 14-6 but a kill by Bonnie Bremner ended the game at 15-6. Penn State hit .457 for the game to .355 for Ohio State. PSU’s Katie Schumacher and Rome had five kills each while OSU’s Snow and Sue Calligaris had four kills each.

Ohio State opened a 2-0 lead in game two off a Suzie Stiling ace serve and a Penn State error. The Nittany Lions tied the match at two off an OSU error and took a 3-2 lead on a Mishka Levy kill. Penn State built a 7-4 lead, but Ohio State closed to 7-6 on two Nittany Lion errors. At 8-7 Penn State, three OSU errors put the lead at 11-7. A PSU error made the score 11-8 and a block by Anne Botica and Sue Calligaris cut the lead to 11-9. OSU close to one (11-10) on a Nittany Lion error, but a Katie Schumacher kill and a block by Schumacher and Levy pushed the lead to 13-10. Another OSU error set game point at 14-10. The Buckeyes sided out on four game points before a Nittany Lion error cut the lead to 14-11. OSU stopped a fifth game point on a Jen Flynn kill. Flynn then scored point 12 on a kill but sided out back to Penn State. The Nittany Lions had a 10-4 advantage in blocks but Ohio State outdug PSU, 35 to 27. Penn State’s Lauren Cacciamani and OSU’s Jen Flynn each had eight kills in the game.

Game three saw Penn State break a 3-3 tied with a kill by Amanda Rome and two by Lauren Cacciamani to take a 6-3 lead. With Penn State ahead 10-5, a Sue Calligaris kill and a PSU error cut the lead to 10-7. A solo block by Cacciamani and a kill by Carrie Schonveld pushed the lead to 12-7. The Buckeyes then scored on three consecutive kills by Anne Botica to cut the lead to 12-10. An OSU error extended the PSU lead to 13-10, but a Jen Flynn kill cut the lead back to two at 13-11. Flynn’s ace serve cut the lead to one at 13-12 and a Rosie Snow kill tied the game at 13. After several sideouts, an OSU error put Penn State at match point, 14-13. Flynn’s sideout kill return the ball to OSU and Snow’s kill tied the game at 14. Cacciamani sided out with a kill and an OSU error set the second match point at 15-14. OSU’s Suzie Stiling’s kill sided out and a Nittany Lion error tied the game at 15. Another Penn State error for point put Ohio State at game point at 16-15. Penn State sided out with a Katie Schumacher kill, but a Nittany Lion error return the ball to Ohio State for its second game point. Penn Sate mishandled the ball on the next rally for an OSU point giving OSU the win at 17-15. The game win stopped a six match streak of 3-0 shutout by Penn State over the Buckeyes. For the game Ohio State hit .322 to .250 for Penn State. The Buckeyes again outdug the Nittany Lions 27 to 18. Flynn had eight kills with Rosie Snow and Botica picking up six each for the Buckeyes. Cacciamani had a team-high eight kills for Penn State.

Penn State came out and scored the first seven points in game four off two kills by Katie Schumacher, a kill by Mishka Levy and four OSU errors. Five more OSU errors added to Penn State’s point total as they won game four 15-4. Penn State hit .455 for the game to .154. Eight kills by Schumacher and five from Lauren Cacciamani guided the Nittany Lions. Jen Flynn and Rosie Snow had five each for Ohio State.

Team total showed Penn State hitting .304 for the match to .228 for Ohio State. The Nittany Lions had a 19 to 11 advantage in blocks while Ohio State outdug Penn State, 88 to 71. Each team recorded 88 kills and two ace serves.

Ohio State completes its four-match homestand this Friday with Northwestern (2-18, 0-10), while Penn State returns home for a Saturday contest with the Wildcats.
