COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (7-3 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) behind four players with double-figure kills defeated Indiana (10-2, 1-2) 15-2, 15-9, 6-15, 15-4 in St. John Arena Friday night. Jen Flynn had a co-match-high of 16 kills (with IU’s Ryann Connors) with Buckeyes’ Shelly Draeger (13), Dana Stearns (12) and Rosie Snow (10) round out OSU’s double-figure scorers. Hoosier Amanda Welter added nine kills as the Buckeyes secured its first Big Ten victory of the season in front of 836 fans.
OSU’s Rosie Snow became the 10th Ohio State student-athlete to surpass the 1,000-career kill mark on her fifth kill of the match. Her 10 kills put her at 1,005 for her career. Snow’s double-figure kill streak was also extended to 31 matches with her 10 kills tonight.
Defensively Rosie Snow had a match-high 18 digs while Dana Stearns collected a match-high five assist blocks. Those five blocks moves Stearns to seventh on the OSU career assist block list with 233 passing Sara Daniel (1991-94) who has 230. Stearns also passes Daniels in total blocks, moving to ninth place with 252. Daniel’s has 250.
Ohio State opened game one with a 4-0 lead off four IU errors. The Hoosiers closed to 5-2 but could get no closer. OSU scored the next 10 points to take the game, 15-2. Ohio State hit .366 in the game to Indiana’s -.026.
Game two saw Indiana open a 6-3 lead before three IU errors tied the game at six. Indiana took a 7-6 lead, but two kills by Suzie Stiling and kills by Shelly Draeger and Jen Flynn put OSU ahead 10-7. The Hoosiers closed to within one at 10-9 on an OSU error and a Ryann Connors kill but would come no closer as five IU hitting errors for OSU points closed the game at 15-9. In the game OSU hit .298 to .156 for IU.
With the scored tied at three in game three, an ace serve by Amanda Welter put the Hoosiers ahead 4-3. Indiana held a 5-4 lead when behind the serve of Cydryce Carter the Hoosiers scored seven consecutive points, including three Carter aces, to take a 12-4 lead. Indiana led 14-4 off kills by Ryann Connors and Amanda Welter. OSU cut the lead to 14-6 but an ace serve by Erin Heimann iced the game at 15-6. The Hoosiers hit .273 for the game to .103 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State built up a 6-0 lead in game four off kills by Rosie Snow and Jen Flynn and four IU hitting errors. The Hoosiers closed to 6-4 before seven consecutive OSU points pushed the lead to 13-4 off two IU hitting errors, kills by Shelly Draeger (2) and Dana Stearns, an ace by Katie Virtue and a block by Stearns and Draeger. Draeger’s 13th kill of the match set up match point and Jen Flynn closed the match with her 16th kill for the 15-4 game win. Ohio State hit .333 for the game to -.037 for Indiana.
For the match Ohio State hit .285 to .098 for Indiana and had a 62-47 margin in kills. The Buckeyes outblocked the Hoosiers eight to four, while Indiana had a seven to two advantage in ace serves. Both teams registered 46 digs.
Ohio State will host Illinois next on Sunday, Oct. 3 in St. John Arena at 2 p.m. The Illini (6-3, 2-1) lost tonight at second-ranked Penn State (13-1, 3-0) 2-15, 5-15, 7-15). Indiana travels to Penn State to play Saturday night.
