COLUMBUS, OhioGeoff Carlston, head coach of the OhioState women’s volleyball team, has announced the 2008 schedule for the Buckeyes. OSU will play in three pre-conference tournaments, travel west to play Loyola Marymount and Southern California and face the always tough double-round robin 20-match Big Ten schedule. The Buckeyes open the season by hosting the Sports Imports Classic with Xavier, Toledo and YoungstownState, Aug. 29-31. OhioState next plays at the Wichita State Tournament with Coastal Carolina and IdahoState Sept. 4-6. An extended West Coast trip will have OhioState play at Loyola Marymount, Sept. 10 and at Southern California, Sept. 12. Rounding out the non-conference schedule will be the Sept. 19-20 Kent State Tournament with Duquesne and ChicagoState.

“We have a non-conference schedule that is going to challenge us in many ways, Carlston said.  “We play USC, Loyola Marymount and WichitaState, all-top 25 caliber teams and on their home courts. Beyond that, we have teams with very different styles built in there as well which will demand our players to be focused and ready to adjust. This is great preparation for the rigors of the Big Ten schedule.”

“We will be the youngest team in the Big Ten Conference so our learning curve is going to have to be quick and steep. We had a strong spring season overall. I was impressed with the distance we traveled in only a few months.  Competing against some high-level programs in the spring, mostly on the road, was invaluable for our team.”

OhioState opens Big Ten Conference play when the Buckeyes host Michigan Sept. 24.
