COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s track and field team opened the 2008 outdoor season Thursday in Austin, Texas on the campus of the University of Texas in the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Senior Veronica Jatsek took fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 196 feet, 2 inches, the toss is an NCAA regional qualifying mark and seventh-best in Ohio State history. Jatsek is looking to add back-to-back All-American honors in the hammer throw to go with her back-to-back All-American honor in the weight throw, that she earned during the indoor season. Senior Ashley Riehm took 12th in the event with a toss of 171 feet.
Ohio State put its young core on the track on display to open one of the biggest outdoor meets in the country. Sophomore Ashley Jones finished 10th in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:13.52. Freshmen Mardz Desmond (2:16.99) and Keesha Brooks (2:20.38) took 14th and 15th respectfully. Sophomore Emily Thompson took fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:44.86. Sophomore Sarah Foster, who missed most of the indoor and cross country season due to injury, returned to competition with a seventh-place finish in the 5,000-meter with a time of 17:49.52.
The 4×800-meter relay team took seventh with a team of all underclassmen. Freshmen Jordan Jenewine, Desmond and Brooks joined Jones to come in with a time of 9:13.41.
Action resumes tomorrow inside Mike A. Myers Stadium at 9 a.m. central standard time with the 4×100-meter relay.
