COLUMBUS, Ohio – After capturing a big upset over No. 35-ranked Marquette last week, the Ohio State women’s tennis team hoped to go 2-0 against another top ranked team Tennessee today. However, the No. 26-ranked Lady Vols escaped with the win 5-4 after taking four-of-six singles matches. Freshmen Michelle Matko (Aurora, Ill) and Monica Rincon (Lapeer, Mich.) posted the only wins for the Buckeyes in singles by defeating Meilings Parks (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) and Emily Woodside (7-6 (2), 6-2) at the No. 3 and 4 spot.
%^$Ohio State grabbed two big victories in doubles from No. 1 team Briana Harris (So., Bradenton, Fla.) and Kristy Dascoli (So., Bradenton, Fla.) and No. 2 team Claudia Castro (Fr., Onalaska, Wis.) and Laura Maloney (Jr., Barrington, Ill.) to tie the match 4-4. Ironically, after posting Ohio State’s only wins in singles, the match would come down to Matko and Rincon going head-to-head against Tennessee’s Ojeda and Reid at the No. 2 doubles spot. Matko and Rincon came back, after being down 3-0, but Ojeda and Reid notched an impressive run to win the match 8-6.
%^$The Buckeyes (3-1) will head to South Bend, Ind. to compete against No. 16-ranked Notre Dame and No. 2-ranked Duke on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13.
