COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team continued play in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships Friday in East Lansing, Mich. Play began with the 64-team doubles main draw, where three Buckeye duos won their first two matches and advanced into the Round of 16 of the tournament.

Ohio State was the only squad to have three doubles teams advance to the Round of 16. Head coach Chuck Merzbacher was proud of his team’s efforts.

“It was a good day for us,” Merzbacher said. “We bounced back well today in doubles after a shaky day in the singles qualifiers. We feel confident about these teams and today was a great team victory for us.”

The duo of Ciara Finucane (Jr., Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) and Kristin Messmer (Jr., Lutherville, Md./McDonough) won its first roundmatch by the score of 8-0 over Alba Berdala and Cecile Perton of Indiana. They also won their second match, defeating Kara Delicata and Allie Shafner of Michigan, 8-6.

Also winning in the first round was Sonia Ruzimovsky (Jr., Brooklyn, NY./Brooklyn Technical) and Angela DiPastina (Fr., Titusville, NJ./Hun School of Princeton). They defeated Myriam Cueva and Eunice Paravicini of Toledo, 8-4. In the second round, they defeated Katie Potts and Kelly Nelson of Notre Dame, 8-6.

Julie Blackmore (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Caitlin O’Keefe (So., Troy, Mich./Troy) defeated Michigan’s Lindsey Howard and Lindsey Goldstein, 9-7, in the first round. They also beat Kerstin-Beeke Pahl and Ashley Moccia of Western Michigan in the second round, 8-2.

Dropping their first round match was the duo of Emily Howard (Sr., Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Julie Voss (Fr., San Angelo, Texas/St. Stephens Academy). They were defeated by Alicia Papa and Jackie Vilines of Xavier by a score of 8-5. The team won its consolation match by a score of 8-2 over Ashley Coulson and Lisa Bartelheim of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. The ITA Midwest Regional continues play Saturday with the Round of 16 in the doubles main draw and the 64-player singles main draw. The Buckeyes will have three teams competing in the doubles quarterfinals and three players competing in singles.
