COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a hard fought match, the Buckeyes lost to the Wisconsin Badgers, 4-3, at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. Wisconsin (8-11, 6-2) edged Ohio State by winning at the No. 5 singles match to clinch their sixth Big Ten win. The Buckeyes fall to 14-8 overall and 6-3 in the Big Ten.
%^$The Buckeyes came out strong, but the Badgers notched two victories in doubles to go up 1-0. No. 21-ranked Kristy Dascoli (So., Bradenton, Fla.) and Briana Harris (So., Bradenton, Fla.) were upset by Wisconsin’s Barbara Urbanski and April Gabler, 8-5, at the No. 1 doubles position. Debbie Reynolds and Katie Dougherty came through with the second win at the No. 3 spot over Ohio State’s Claudia Castro (Fr., Onalaska, Wis.) and Laura Maloney (So., Barrington, Ill.), 8-5.
%^$The Buckeyes fought back with Harris defeating Gabler, 6-3, 6-4 and Monica Rincon (Fr., Lapeer, Mich.) stepping up and taking Dena Baritat, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot. Wisconsin captured two more points with No. 44-ranked Urbanski defeating Dascoli, 6-4, 6-3 and Andrea Nathan coming away with the 6-0, 6-1 victory over Michelle Matko (Fr., Aurora, Ill.).
%^$Maloney, knowing the Buckeyes needed a point to even the score, netted a tough three-set win over Mindy Sweeney. Then, with the score even, Castro and Reynolds split the first two sets, both going into tiebreakers, 7-6. After breaking Castro’s serve, Reynolds would never look back to take the match in the third set, 6-2 and clinch the win for the Badgers.
%^$The Buckeyes will play their last regular season match on Friday, April 23 against Minnesota at 2:30 p.m. at the Stickney Tennis Center.
