COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team ended its record-setting regular season with a 5-2 triumph at Michigan Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The win is Ohio State’s eighth-consecutive victory – a school record – and gives OSU (16-6 overall) a 9-1 record in Big Ten play, which gives the Buckeyes their first ever regular season Big Ten title.

The Big Ten regular season title is OSU’s first in school history. Ohio State’s best previous conference finish was sixth, set last season.

Ohio State captured two of the three doubles matches to gain the doubles point. The Buckeyes’ No. 1 duo of Kristy Dascoli (Jr., Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Academy) and Monica Rincon (So., Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West) defeated the Wolverines’ Brooke Hart and Jen Duprez, 8-2, while Claudia Castro (So., Dublin, Ohio/Aquinas) and Michelle Matko (So., Aurora, Ill./Aurora West) eked out a narrow doubles win over Joanne Musgrove and Erryn Weggenman by winning the tie-break, 7-4, en route to a 9-8 win.

OSU earned four of the six singles points, including each of the first three spots. Dascoli knocked off Hart, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles while Rincon outlasted Danielle Lund, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 2. Matko claimed the No. 3 singles win with a 6-0, 6-4 trouncing of Szandra Fuzesi. Laura Maloney (Jr., Barrington, Ill.) earned the fifth Buckeye point with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 5.

The Buckeyes return to Ann Arbor next weekend, April 27-29, for the Big Ten Championships.
