COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team lost to non-conference opponent Virginia Tech, 5-2, Sunday at Jesse Owens West Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. The loss was the Buckeyes’ first this season, dropping their record to 4-1 (0-0 Big Ten), while the Hokies improve to 4-0 (0-0 ACC).
The Buckeyes will return to the courts at 6 p.m. Sunday to host Miami (Ohio).
The Hokies won the doubles point with two victories. At No. 2, the tandem of Sonia Ruzimovsky (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Caitlin O’Keefe (Jr., Troy, Mich./Troy) posted the only Buckeye victory, downing Jessica Long and Abbey Walker, 8-4. At No. 1, seniors Kristin Messmer (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Ciara Finucane (Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) were defeated by Inga Beermann and J.J. Larson, 8-5. At No. 3, Ashley James and Jessica Brouwer downed Julie Blackmore (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Christina Keesey (Northfield, Minn./Northfield), 8-5.
Ruzimovsky and DiPastina posted singles wins for the Buckeyes. Ruzimovsky defeated Long at No. 2 (6-4, 6-1) and DiPastina downed Walker (6-4, 6-4) at No. 6.
Two Buckeyes lost in three sets. Keesey was defeated by James (3-6, 6-3, 7-5) at No. 3 and O’Keefe lost at No. 4 to Karina Porushkevich (6-1, 6-7, 6-1).
At No. 1, Blackmore lost to Beermann, 6-4, 6-4, and Ally Mueller (Fr., Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas) was downed by J.J. Larson, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5.
