COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team lost a close match to conference-foe Michigan, falling, 4-3, at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturday. The Buckeyes and Wolverines split the singles matches, including four that went to three sets, but UM won the doubles point to clinch the victory.

Ohio State, ranked No. 36, drops to 15-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten. The victory ends the Buckeyes’ six-match winning streak. No. 66 Michigan improves to 9-8 on the season and 2-4 in conference play.

For just the second time this season, the Buckeyes did not win the doubles point. The teams split the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, with OSU’s No. 43-ranked duo of Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./West) and Meaghan Colville (So., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) winning at the No. 1 spot, topping Michelle DaCosta and Leanne Rutherford, 8-6. At No. 2 UM’s Jen Duprez and Kim Plaushines defeated Erica Fisk (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and Sadhaf Pervez (Jr., Warren, N.H./Watchung Hills), 8-4. The Wolverines clinched the doubles point as the duo of Kavitha Tipirneni and Chrissie Nolan beat OSU’s Michelle Matko (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Aurora West) and Lindsay Williams (So., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves), 8-6, at No. 3.

The teams split the singles matches to give UM the win, with each team winning two three-set matches. Matko posted the first win for the Buckeyes, topping Rutherford easily, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 to extend her winning streak to seven. Michigan regained the lead (2-1), as Nolan beat Pervez in two sets, 6-3, 6-2. The Buckeyes evened the match, as Williams came back to win in three sets over Duprez at No. 5. Williams lost the first set, 6-2, before rebounding for a 6-3 win in the second set. The third set came down to a tiebreaker, with Williams winning to give OSU its second singles victory of the day. The second three-set match of the day went the other way, as UM’s Plaushines came back from a set down to beat OSU’s Colville, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, to give UM the lead, 3-2. Ohio State again tied the match, with Rincon winning at No. 1 in three sets over Tipirneni in a close match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The match came down to the No. 2 singles spot, where UM’s DaCosta defeated OSU’s Fisk in three sets. DaCosta won the first set, 7-5, before Fisk battled back to win the second set in a tiebreaker. The third set was close, as DaCosta pulled out a 6-4 win to give the Wolverines the match, 4-3.

The Buckeyes return to action at 10 a.m. Sunday against the Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing, Mich.
