COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team was defeated by Michigan, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round of the 2002 Big Ten Championship at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Bloomington, Ind. Ohio State, the No. 3 seed, is eliminated from the tournament while Michigan, the No. 6 seed, advances to play No. 2 Wisconsin in the semifinal round.

The match started with Michigan winning the doubles point. At No. 1 the OSU duo of Monica Rincon (Sr., Lapeer, Mich./West) and Meaghan Colville (So., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) fell to Michelle DaCosta and Leeanne Rutherford, 8-5. At No. 3, the Buckeyes’ Michelle Matko (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Aurora West) and Lindsay Williams (So., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) were defeated by Chrissie Nolan and Kavitha Tipirneni, 8-5. The No. 2 match was abandoned.

The Wolverines won the first three singles matches off the court, all in straight sets, to clinch the victory. OSU’s Erica Fisk (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) lost at No. 2 to DaCosta (6-4, 6-2), while at No. 4 Matko was defeated by Rutherford (6-0, 6-4). At No. 6, OSU’s Claudia Castro (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Aquinas (Wis.) was beaten by Kim Plaushines. The matches at Nos. 1, 3 and 5 all were abandoned.

The Buckeyes now must wait to see if they receive a bid into the 2002 NCAA Championships. Brackets will be announced at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 4. The squad has qualified for the national tournament each of the last three seasons.
