The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team concluded the 2004 Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships in eighth place Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn., with five Buckeyes reaching NCAA B qualifying times and four freshmen divers earning top marks. Michigan traded the lead several times with Penn State, but pushed ahead for the championship title in the last two events.

Reaching the first NCAA B qualifying time for the Buckeyes, Stephanie Raezer (Sr., Newark, Del./Glasgow) placed 17th in the 500-yard freestyle with a lifetime-best time of 4:53.45. Deanna Strunk (So., West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) picked up the momentum in the third day of competition with a ninth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with another NCAA B qualifying time of 4:20.56, while Raezer finished in 15th with a time of 4:27.25. Rebekah Rychvalsky (Fr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill) closed the third day with a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:04.11.

Continuing the Buckeye tradition of excellence in the diving well and showing the strongest freshmen appearance in the Big Ten, the diving squad added a total of 87 points to the Buckeye final score. Julie Broms (Fr., Springfield, Ill./North Central [Ind.]) earned a second-place finish in the 3-meter dive with 530.65 points, missing first place by less than 14 points. Ashley Bourland (Fr., Conroe, Texas/Montgomery) and Anesa Beard (Fr., Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) also finished in 10th and 11th place in the 3-meter dive, with the diving squad adding 30 points to the Buckeye score from the 3-meter dive.

In the 1-meter dive, Amber Simmons (Fr., Sparks, Md./Hereford) finished third, respectively, with 287.75 points and was closely followed by Broms in fourth place with 283.40 points. Bourland returned on the last day of competition to place fifth in the platform five with a score of 385.25, while Broms, Simmons and Beard earned 12th-, 14th- and 16h-place finishes in the 1-meter dive as well. Carrie McCambridge of Purdue won all-three diving events at the conference meet and earned the Boilermakers their first Big Ten diving championship titles.

The five Buckeyes who posted NCAA consideration times now will wait to see if they are selected to compete in the 2004 NCAA Championships, March 18-20 in College Station, Texas. All of the freshmen divers travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the NCAA Zone C diving meet March 12-14 at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center.
