Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team (1-0-1; 0-0-0 Big Ten) defeated Xavier (0-2-0; 0-0-0 A-10), 2-0, Sunday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Lara Dickenmann scored the first goal for the Buckeyes in 2006 and freshman Ali Schwach tallied her first collegiate goal in head coach Lori Walker’s 100th Buckeye win.

Walker’s OSU career record now is 100-74-15 in ten seasons and her career mark stands at 113-97-16 in 12 seasons.

OSU put up 12 shots, including three on goal in the first half. Dickenmann (Jr., Kriens, Switzerland/DFC Sursee) put the Buckeyes on the board first with her unassisted goal from inside the 18-yard box at 7:44. Less than two minutes later, at the 9:22 mark, Schwach (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Bangu Tsunami Sota) followed with a score from the far left wing of the 18-yard box. Lisa Grubb (Sr., Portage, Mich./Michigan Hawks) was credited with the assist. The Buckeyes had another chance to increase their lead with Grubb, who was on the pitch for a full 90, firing a shot from inside the 6-yard box. However, Musketeer keeper Anne Finnerty made the save at the top of the box to keep the score 2-0.

“What I was most pleased with was our enthusiasm,” Walker said. “We maintained it throughout the game. To go ahead two goals early, it’s not easy to maintain enthusiasm, but we continued to attack.”

In the second half, OSU notched 13 more shots, including five on goal, but was unable to add to its lead. The Buckeye defense, once again led by goalkeeper Lauren Robertson (Fr, Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues) and defenders Emily Francis (Sr., Alliance, Ohio/Ohio Premier), Melissa Miller (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Kolping) and Keiana Mitchell (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Dayton Soccer Academy), all who played a full 90 minutes, limited Xavier to three shots in the stanza and four in the match. Robertson made three saves compared to Finnerty’s six and the Scarlet and Gray held the corner kicks advantage, 10-0.

Ohio State will travel to the Puma Classic at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. Hosted by Pepperdine University, the tournament will run Sept. 1 and Sept. 3. On the first day of competition, the Buckeyes will match up against San Diego at 4 p.m. EST. OSU then will meet Pepperdine at 5 p.m. EST.
