COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team (5-6-2; 2-4-0 Big Ten) dropped a 4-2 decision to Purdue Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Melissa Miller and Taylor Smith each scored a goal for the Buckeyes. Ohio State will conclude its five-game homestand Friday when it plays host to Penn State at 7 p.m. The Scarlet and Gray will try to break the NCAA attendance record of 6,527 when they meet the Nittany Lions in a re-match of the 2004 Big Ten Tournament final. Last season, Ohio State outlasted Penn State for a 2-0 win at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium for the conference tournament crown.
Against the Boilermakers, the Buckeyes got on the board first when Miller (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Kolping) headed in a shot on a corner kick in the 16th minute of action. Caitlin Colfer (Fr., Albany, N.Y./Albertson) and Lisa Collison (Fr., Niagara Falls, Ontario/ Burlington Flames) were credited with the assists. Purdue answered the OSU score with three goals, the first tallied by Boilermaker goals team-leader Jessica Okoroafo at the 18:02 mark. Okoroafo went on to record her second goal of the game when she took a pass from teammate Rebecca Robison and shot the ball from the middle of the six-yard box. Purdue’s Jill Sarbaugh ended the first-half scoring with an unassisted goal at 33:46.
In the second half, Smith recorded her first OSU career goal in the 60th minute after Carleta Arbulu (So., Grover Beach, Calif./So Cal United) led her to the top of the six-yard box with a cross from the left side of the net. With the Boilermakers’ lead cut to one, Purdue’s Parrissa Eyorokon completed the scoring when she sent the ball past OSU keeper Courtney Cripps (Fr., Acworth, Ga./United Quest) for the 4-2 final.
“With the exception of a 15 minute stretch, we played hard,” Lori Walker, head coach, said. “Purdue took advantage of us for about 15 minutes and that’s all they needed. Now, we start preparing for Penn State.”
For the game, Ohio State notched 13 shots to Purdue’s 23 and both teams were even in corner kicks with five. Staci Sinkway (So., Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues), who received the start, played 47:05 minutes for five saves and Cripps, who saw action for 42:55 minutes, made one stop. The Buckeyes also had two team saves on the afternoon. Boilermaker Lauren Mason made four stops.
