Columbus, Ohio – The 2003 Ohio State women’s soccer team represented the program’s 10-year anniversary in strong fashion as the Buckeyes bested Indiana State 4-1 Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium to open the season with a victory in a very special evening for the women’s soccer program at the university.
Former players from the last 10 teams at OSU were in attendance to witness the Buckeyes dominate Indiana State, as Ohio State tallied two goals in each half to claim the 3-goal victory.
“I was thrilled to see so many former players come back,” Ohio State head coach Lori Walker, who has been at the Buckeye helm for seven of the 10 seasons, said. “Ohio State is all about tradition. I think this 10-year celebration is a great way for our younger players to get in touch with some of our former players. To win the way we did tonight was a testament to a continued effort to build our tradition here at Ohio State.”
The Buckeyes attacked early and often in the first half as they totaled a 15 to 3 advantage in shots during the first stanza, including a 10-shot advantage in the shots on goal department. Two of the strikes went for scores as Ohio State’s forward tandem of sophomore Colleen Hoban (Strongsville, Ohio) and junior Lisa Grubb (Portage, Mich.) combined to put the Buckeyes up 2-0 less than 15 minutes into the contest.
Hoban opened the scoring as she received a feed from junior Heather Miller (Centerville, Ohio) from just outside the 6-yard box and slid a shot past ISU keeper Carey Patton for the 1-0 OSU advantage. Grubb followed less than five minutes later as she tallied her first of two scores on the evening with a spectacular 30-yard lob shot that snuck just past Patton’s extended arms in the left hand corner. The dominating performance continued in the second stanza as the Buckeyes extended their lead to 3-0 following Grubb’s second tally of the night in the 59th minute. Ohio State displayed excellent execution on the score as junior Liz Mumley (Woodbridge, Va.) set a spectacular crossing pass from the left side to the right of the 6-yard box where freshman Jackie Lafond (Milton, Mass.) found Grubb in front of the net for the scoring strike.
The Buckeyes added the fourth goal of the evening in the 64th minute as junior Heather Miller (Centerville, Ohio) pounded a Kathy Fulk (Dublin, Ohio) rebounded shot into the back of the Sycamore net from approximately 15 yards out. Grubb also notched an assist on the play.
Indiana State registered its goal in the 73rd minute when Kristin Clinton received a corner kick from Natalie Costa and buried the shot in the OSU goal.
Ohio State controlled play the entire contest as the Buckeyes out shot ISU 32 to 7, highlighted by a 23 to 3 edge in shots on goal. Buckeye junior goalkeeper Jen Heaney (Cincinatti, Ohio) recorded her first victory since Sept. 22 of the 2002 season, recording two saves.
The Buckeyes next take to the pitch at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at Wright State.
