COLUMBUS, Ohio Ashley Bowyer, a two year starting midfielder for the Ohio State women’s soccer team, will compete April 5-13 at the U.S. Under-20 National Team camp. This tryout camp will earn players the opportunity to represent the United States at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Nov. 19 thru Dec. 7 in Chile under the direction of former US Women’s National Team Coach Tony DiCicco.
Bowyer, a sophomore academic all-Big Ten Conference performer from Aliso Viejo, Calif. who is majoring in health sciences and pre-physical therapy, has been invited to attend the U-20 training camp that will be held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
“This training camp is designed to identify new players and outline the expectation of our National Team’s programs,” Bowyer said. “The best thing to come out of this opportunity for me would be to perform well and to be asked to come back to a later event or training camp. These preliminary camps are tryouts that will decide who makes the national teams.”
Bowyer has experience on her side. The 5-7 standout, who had three goals and 10 points for the 2007 Ohio State team that competed in the NCAA tournament after finishing as Big Ten tournament runners-up, was invited to this camp last year as well.
“I want to show well and I want to be able to display how well I can play,” Bowyer said. “I participated in this camp last year. It’s nice to have that under my belt. I know what the expectations are so I won’t be as nervous.”
Bowyer competed for the U.S. U-20 team in three matches last spring against college teams BYU, SMU and Texas A&M.
“Ashley continues to grow and certainly has national team potential,” Ohio State coach Lori Walker said. “She has tremendous skill, composure and vision. She impacts the flow of a game on both sides of the ball, she has excellent timing in the air, she has accurate and dangerous long range shooting as well as a deep fitness base and work ethic.”
Bowyer will have to miss the team’s annual banquet this Saturday at the Ohio Stadium Recruiting Room while competing at the U-20 camp, but she knows that when opportunity calls, “you have to make sacrifices.” And for a chance to compete on a United States national soccer team, she is ok with missing this team meal.
Bowyer will also miss three Ohio State spring exhibition games: April 6 vs. Cincinnati at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium; April 11 at Dayton; and April 13 vs. the U-17 Canadian National Team.
