COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team moves to 5-2 overall in 2008 after delivering a 17-2 loss to Robert Morris (1-5; 0-0 NEC) Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes had 12 student-athletes register at least one goal with both senior Jessica Patane and sophomore Brittney Zerhusen notching a hat trick.

Ohio State got to work early, tallying the first seven goals of the game. Junior Rachel Hawes was the first Buckeye to score with an unassisted goal with 26:14 on the clock. Zerhusen notched her first of two first half goals off a pass from senior captain Kristen Slahor at 23:09 of the first. Slahor, who leads the team in points (32) and assists (23), added two more assists and a goal of her own before halftime.

Patane knocked in two goals while sophomore Kelly Haggerty, freshman Maghan Beaudrault and Slahor beat Robert Morris goalkeeper Erica Webb once each before Jenn Collins scored the Colonials’ only tally of the half. Webb scored on Buckeye starting goalkeeper Kristen Gilwee with 14:49 left to play in the half to make it a 7-1 game.

Senior Amanda Shimp, sophomore Rachel Cornicello and Zerhusen tacked on three more goals before the clock ran out to make it a 10-1 game heading into halftime. In the first, the Buckeyes outshot the Colonials, 26-6, and controlled possession of the game, collecting 17 ground balls and eight draw controls to Robert Morris’ nine ground balls and four draw controls.

In the second half, Ohio State continued to attack, scoring the first four goals of the half. Shimp connected on her second goal of the game at 27:22. With the score at 12-1, Patane registered her third of the game while juniors Keri Yourick and Margaret Prunte scored a goal each to make it a 14-1 game. Colonial Emily Tomlinson knotted Robert Morris’ second goal off a pass from junior Ashley Levering with 10:48 left. Tomlinson beat Buckeye freshman goalkeeper Annie Carruthers who came in for Ohio State at halftime. In 30 minutes of work, Carruthers made three saves.

Freshmen Jacqueline Orona and Maggie Smith contributed to the Ohio State effort, scoring a goal apiece and Zerhusen knocked in her third of the game to give the Buckeyes the 17-2 win.

In the matchup, Ohio State outshot Robert Morris, 44-12, while also picking up more ground balls, 26-17, and draw controls, 13-8.  On the season, Beaudrault, Shimp, Patane and Zerhusen split a four-way tie for the team’s lead in goals with 12 each while Slahor has a team-best 32 points and 23 assists.

The Buckeyes remain at home to face St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The game with serve as Alumni Day for the women’s lacrosse program and the first 150 fans receive a free t-shirt.
