ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Senior Heather Farrell (Sr., Perth, Ontario) recorded three points to lead the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team to a 3-0 shutout over the St. Cloud State Huskies Saturday night at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The Buckeyes’ first sweep of the season improves their record to 3-5-0 overall and 3-5-0 in WCHA action. The Huskies are now 2-6-0 and 0-4-0 in the WCHA.

Ohio State dominated the first period, as the Buckeyes scored all three goals of the game and recorded 14 shots to St. Cloud State’s three. OSU’s sophomore Jennifer Desson (Jr., Niagara Falls, Ontario) got the Buckeyes on the scoreboard when she posted a goal assisted by Jana Harrigan (So., Burlington, Ontario) and Heather Farrell (Sr., Perth, Ontario) at 10:08. Freshman Amber Bowman (Fr., Innisfil, Ontario) soon followed with her first career goal on the power play at 13:28. Harrigan and Farrell assisted on the goal. A scuffle broke out in front of the Buckeye goal leading to four coincidental penalties, a 10-minute misconduct and a two-minute instigation penalty. The result was an Ohio State 5-on-3 power-play opportunity in which Buckeye forward Farrel capitalized on at 17:01. Freshman Tessa Bonhomme (Fr., Sudbury, Ontario) and senior Emma Laaksonen (Sr., Espoo, Finland) tallied assists on what turned out to be the last goal of the game.

The Buckeyes continued their aggressive play in the second period as they tallied 10 shots to the Huskies six. Despite not scoring in the second or third stanzas the OSU defense held St. Cloud State scoreless.

OSU goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Fr., Bradford, Ontario) recorded her first career shutout, as she tallied 16 saves in the full 60:00 minutes of action. SCSU goalie Lauri St. Jacques recorded 26 saves and allowed three goals.

The Buckeyes outshot the Huskies 29-16. Ohio State held St. Cloud State scoreless on all three power play chances. The Buckeyes were 2-5 on the power play.

Ohio State returns home for a two week homestand, taking on the Bemidji State Beavers Nov. 21-22 and the Niagara Purple Eagles Nov. 29-30 in Columbus.
