COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team opened its 2005-06 season with a 2-1 victory over WCHA foe St. Cloud State on Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. OSU moves to 1-0-0 overall and in the league, while SCSU falls to 0-1-0 overall and in the WCHA.

Freshman Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/London Devilettes) and sophomore Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario/Windsor Wildcats) scored the Buckeye’s two goals while junior goaltender Erika Vandeveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Cheifs) made 28 saves to pick up the win.

Marziali scored the first Ohio State goal of the season at 17:35 in the first period. Fellow freshman Kelly Cahill (Farmington Hills, Mich./Honeybaked) fired a shot toward the goal from the top of the right circle. Marziali, standing in the slot, then tipped the shot into the net. The goal by Marziali and the assist by Cahill marked each player’s first point in an Ohio State sweater. The Buckeyes took their 1-0 lead into the first intermission but were out-shot by the Huskies, 14-7.

The two teams skated to a scoreless second period with SCSU still holding the advantage in shots 10-6 for a two-period margin of 24-13. St. Cloud then knotted the game at 1-1 in the third period when Laura Fast slipped the puck past Vandeveer during a scramble in front of the net at 1:41. Fast was assisted by Kristy Oonincx and Denelle Maguet.

Ohio State came roaring back at the other end of the ice regaining the lead just 27 seconds later. Aldous swiped the puck from an SCSU player and knocked it five-hole past the Husky goaltender, Lauri St. Jacques, to put the Buckeyes ahead 2-1 at 2:08. The goal was Aldous’ second of her career.

SCSU had a scoring opportunity as the period was winding down when Oonincx grabbed the puck while on the penalty kill and had a breakaway down the ice. Oonincx’s shot was stonewalled by Vandeveer as she made a sliding block to maintain the OSU victory.

Overall, St. Cloud totaled 29 shots on goal while Ohio State had 23. Marziali and sophomore Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Durham) each had four shots on goal to lead the Buckeyes. Oonincx led St. Cloud with eight shots. Both teams were scoreless on the power play at 0-for-3.

The two teams will conclude their season-opening series Saturday at 4 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
