COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 10th-ranked Ohio State women’s hockey team completed its sweep of St. Cloud State with a 5-1 win Saturday. The two victories marked only the second time the Buckeyes have opened a season with a sweep of an opponent, with the last time on Oct. 11-12, 2002 at Minnesota State. Ohio State moves to 2-0-0 overall and in the WCHA, while SCSU falls to 0-2-0 overall and in the conference.
Three Buckeyes had multiple-point games as freshman Kelly Cahill (Farmington Hills, Mich./Honeybaked) and junior Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros) each scored three points while junior Katie Maroney (La Porte, Ind./Culver Academy) added two. Cahill had an assist in Friday’s game for a four-point weekend in her first Ohio State series.
Ohio State built a 4-0 lead with two goals in the first and second periods. Cahill opened the scoring for the Buckeyes as she fired a shot past starting SCSU goaltender Lauri St. Jacques just 5:11 into the game for a quick 1-0 lead. Freshman Hayley Klassen (Warman, Saskatchewan/College of Notre Dame) then collected her first career point when she buried the rebound from a shot by her linemate Maroney to increase the score to 2-0. After one period, the Buckeyes held a 10-7 margin in shots.
The second period began with another quick OSU goal when Maroney scored on a slapshot from the top of the right circle just 36 seconds into the stanza. Bowman pushed the lead to 4-0 when she scored her first goal of the season and second point of the game at 8:00. St. Cloud State then took its time out and replaced St. Jacques in net with Kendell Newell. St. Jacques left the game with four goals on 16 shots.
The Buckeyes took their 4-0 lead into the second intermission and maintained their lead in shots, 22-14.
St. Cloud State finally got past junior goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) when Ashley Stewart scored soon after the puck dropped in the third period at the 15 second mark. Vanderveer continued her solid play in net the remaining minutes of the game, saving the next seven shots on goal to pick up her second win. In the two games, Vandeveer stopped 49 of 51 shots faced.
Cahill scored her second goal of the game and the first Buckeye power-play goal of the season when she picked up the puck from senior Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) at 14:08 and slipped it through Newell’s legs to increase the score to 5-1.
Overall, Ohio State outshot St. Cloud State 29-22. The Buckeye penalty kill continued to perform well going 4-for-4 in the game and 7-for-7 in the series. The Ohio State power play was 1-for-3.
The Buckeyes will next travel to Boston, Mass., to face the Huskies of Northeastern Oct. 14-15 at Matthews Arena. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
