MANKATO, Minn.-The Ohio State women’s hockey team (6-6-3 overall, 3-5-3 in the WCHA) skated back to .500 Friday with its first shutout win of the season, defeating Minnesota State, Mankato (2-12-1 overall, 0-9-0 in the WCHA), 2-0, in the series opener at All Seasons Arena.
The Buckeyes took the early lead behind Heather Farrell’s (So., Perth, Ontario/Pomfret) goal at 2:46 in the first stanza. Emma Laaksonen (So., Espoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen) fed the puck to Farrell, whose shot through the five hole found the back of the net. Ohio State outshot Minnesota State, 7-6, as each team had about an equal number of scoring chances in the first period.
Ohio State held on to its 1-0 lead through a scoreless second stanza. The Buckeyes played a more technically solid period than the Mavericks behind strong forechecking but could not convert. OSU’s best scoring opportunity came with 35 seconds remaining in the second, when Jennifer Desson’s (Fr., Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul’s) high shot hit the left post.
Shana Frost (Jr., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside) had the Buckeyes’ best scoring chance in the third at the 11:07 mark, however, MSU goalie Shari Vogt denied Frost with a glove save. MSU pulled Vogt with 40 seconds remaining in the game and Laaksonen sealed a Buckeye victory with an empty-net goal at 19:36.
Ohio State outshot Minnesota State, 34-18. Melissa Glaser (So., Rockford, Ill./St. Mark’s) was named the first star of the game for her 18 saves and the shutout. Vogt recorded 32 stops in 59:44. For the first time since Nov. 2 (at Minnesota), the Buckeyes were scoreless on the power play, going 0-for-4 with the man advantage. The Mavericks were 0-for-2 on the power play.
Ohio State and Minnesota State meet again in the series finale at 8:05 p.m. (EST) at All Seasons Arena.
