Beth Ann Ballard leads Buckeyes on two events; Rebecca Best and Kiki Holman share team all-around lead
COLUMBUS, Ohio Host and 22nd-ranked Arizona State scored a season-high 196.175 to defeat the Ohio State women’s gymnastics team, which scored a 194.15, Friday night at Wells-Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz. The Buckeyes, who scored slightly over their season regional qualifying score of 194.135, are now 4-4-1 on the road this season and 6-6-1 overall.
A season-high four gymnasts competed in the all-around for Ohio State, which snapped a stretch of back-to-back meets with a team score under 194.
Freshman Rebecca Best and junior Kiki Holman shared the team’s best all-around score with a 38.875, which tied for fourth in the meet. For Holman, it marked the first time this season she has competed on floor (9.775) and in the all-around.
Sophomore Beth Ann Ballard led Ohio State on two events, scoring a career-high 9.850 on vault to place third in the meet and a 9.750 on bars to tie her career high and place fourth in the meet.
Holman led the Buckeyes on beam with a 9.725, which placed fifth in the meet, and she added a 9.775 on floor.
Ohio State’s final event leader was senior Maalika Moore-Thomas on floor with a 9.875, which placed second in the meet.
For Best, it marked the sixth time in seven all-around performances this season that she led Ohio State or tied for the team lead in the all-around. She scored a 9.825 on vault to tie Moore-Thomas for the Buckeyes’ top score and tie for fourth in the meet, and added a 9.75 on bars (third on team, sixth in meet), 9.70 on beam (second on team) and 9.60 on floor.
Ohio State sophomore Hillary Dow scored a 38.225 in the all-around that included a 9.75 on vault and a 9.725 on floor.
Junior Alyssa Meyer scored a 9.75 on bars, which was Ohio State’s second-best bars score, and she added a 9.775 on floor. Also for the Buckeyes, senior Jessica Rosette scored a 9.725 on floor and freshman Jessica Staton notched a 9.75 on vault.
Ohio State wraps up the regular season next Saturday when the Buckeyes travel to Morgantown, W.Va., to take on West Virginia at 7 p.m.
