COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team wrapped up its 2011 season Wednesday with a team banquet, honoring several gymnasts with awards and reflecting on its strong season in which the team finished 16th in the nation and was represented at the NCAA Championship by senior Rebecca Best.

Freshman Sarah Miller, the 2011 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a first team All-Big Ten selection, won the ‘O’Chievement Award, given to the team’s most valuable gymnast. Freshman Melanie Shaffer, a second team All-Big Ten selection, won the Coaches’ Award and also was named the team’s Most Improved Gymnast. Sophomore Colleen Dean, a first team All-Big Ten selection, was chosen as the team’s Most Dedicated gymnast, while Best was named Most Inspirational.

The gymnasts also were presented with several Impact Awards, which are given to a gymnast who competes and makes her routine in every meet of the season and has an average score of over a 9.70 on the event. On vault, the Impact Award recipients were junior Taylor Jones, Miller and Shaffer. On uneven bars, the award was given to Dean and freshman Alex DeLuca. On balance beam, junior Nicole Krauter was named an Impact Award winner and Shaffer again won the award for floor exercise.
