Complete 2000-01 Women’s Basketball Schedule

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s basketball team will travel some 7,500 miles before enjoying its home opener this fall, launching the 2000-01 season Nov. 17 at Cleveland State followed by a stop in Anchorage, Alaska, as competitors in the Carrs Great Alaska Shootout Nov. 21-22. The latter trek represents the program’s first-ever trip to Alaska and will precede the Ohio State men’s basketball team’s appearance in the Alaska Shootout Nov. 22-25.

Nine teams that marked play in the 2000 postseason grace the schedule, including six in the Big Ten Conference. The Buckeyes also have one date yet to fill.

Ohio State’s home schedule features Big East representative Seton Hall in the Nov. 29th opener, and matchups against perennial powers Long Beach State (Dec. 3) and UCLA (Dec. 21).

“The highlight of our non-conference schedule is of course the opportunity to play with our men’s team in Alaska,” Coach Beth Burns said. “We also really wanted to get to different parts of the state in playing Cleveland State and Bowling Green.

“Our game with UCLA is part of a home-and-home series so next season we will travel there and include a stop in Arizona. That is in keeping with our goal to give our players a chance to be seen in different parts of the country as well as prepare us for conference play.

“I think our Big Ten schedule is very favorable with regard to our age and experience level.”

The Big Ten season begins with a two-game homestand in Value City Arena Dec. 28 vs. Indiana and Dec. 31 vs. Final Four participant Penn State. Single game matches will be played against Michigan State, Illinois, Purdue and Wisconsin.

The 2001 Big Ten Tournament, played last season at Indianapolis’ Conseco Fieldhouse, will be hosted in a new town and venue, March 2-5 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. Burns, entering her 12th career season (196-121 overall) and fourth at the helm of the Buckeyes, will enjoy the return of six letterwinners and four starters from last year’s 13-15 campaign.
