COLUMBUS, Ohio –The women’s cross country programs opened up their 2019 campaign in Oxford, Ohio last Friday, Aug. 30 at the Miami Opener. Going into the competition, the women were preseason ranked 26th in the nation and fifth in the Great Lakes Region according the the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll.
The women ended the competition with just 19 points to take home their first title of the season. Ohio State’s winning performance was almost perfect as they went 1-2-3-4 finish from Abby Nichols, Lainey Studebaker, Allie Guagenti and Kalee Soehnlen. Devon Leahy was ninth overall just four spots shy of a fifth place finish for the Bucks. The leading scores from the Miami Opener were a mix of not only highly and local runners but also a freshman who’s from Ohio. The last time they opened with a similar start to the season was 2014 with a 1-2-3-4-6 finish, led by All-American Katie Bochers, at the Dayton Flyers Invite (19 points). Interesting enough, they were also preseason ranked 26th in the nation during the same year.
Ohio State has a few highly decorated runners who will return to compete dawning scarlet and gray. Indoor mile national champions Julia Rizk, 6k Big Ten champion Abby Nichols and top five runner Lainey Studebaker.
