Women Place 13th at Pre Nationals

Louisville, Ky. – The Ohio State women’s and men’s cross country team competed at the 2017 edition of Pre Nationals on Saturday at the E.P Tom Sawyer Park. The men’s team won its unseeded race, and the women placed 13th in a field of 43 teams that had several teams ranked in the top 30 of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll.

Men’s Recap
The Buckeyes were able to snag first place in today’s race in Louisville. The Buckeyes collaborated for a team score of 103 points to beat BYU by nine points. Evan Stifel (24:36.8/8k) and Aaron Wood (24:58.7/8k/personal best) were the top finishers for the Buckeyes coming in at 13th and 14th place. Today’s race was Stifel’s 10th straight race being the Buckeyes’ top finisher.

 Finishing third and fourth for the Buckeyes were Alex Lomong and Mitch Leitch.  Lomong clocked a personal-best 8k time of 24:52.2 and Leitch was not too far behind with a time of 24:52.6. Lomong and Leitch hailed in at 24th and 25th out of 215 runners.

 Jake Mandel was the final scorer for the Buckeyes coming in at 41st place with a time of 25:04.7. Freshman Paul Bete registered a personal best in only his second race in the Scarlet and Gray with a time of 26:08.4. 

Women’s Recap
The women’s team used quality efforts from Emily Stoodley and Christine Frederick in their first 6k race of the season to finish 14th as a team (455 points) in a field of 43 teams. Stoodley clocked a personal best of 20:49.8 to place 58th in a field of 288 runners. Frederick was just a second off of Stoodley’s pace with a time of 20:50.9 to finish in 61st place.

 The trio of Sarah Kanney, Caroline Millican and Kalee Soehnlen rounded out the scoring effort for the Scarlet and Gray. Kanney placed 109th with a readout of 21:17.2, while Millican (21:20.4) and Soehnlen (21:26.0/personal best), both freshmen running their third career races, took 115th and 124 place, respectively.

 No. 2 Oregon claimed the team title with a team score of 63 points.
