COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State women’s lacrosse closed its home season with a dramatic 15-13 ALC victory over No. 10 Vanderbilt Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. 

The Buckeyes, now 10-3 and 2-0 in the American Lacrosse Conference, are ranked 13th by, 15th by the IWLCA and 16th by Inside Lacrosse this week.

A career-best five goals from senior Rachel Hawes were the difference on Senior Day in the back-and-forth contest. Leading 6-5 at the half, the Buckeyes never trailed during the second stanza, but the Commodores tied the game at 7-7 and 9-9 and got as close as 14-13 with 2:53 remaining on a goal from Ally Carey. But Buckeye goalie Kristen Gilwee stopped an Alex Priddy shot with 43 seconds remaining, and OSU’s Alayna Markwordt punched in a goal as time expired for the 15-13 decision.

“I’m so excited that we were able to beat Vanderbilt. We’ve had a lot of close games with them but haven’t beaten them in 10 years,” said Ohio State coach Sue Stimmel. “The way the season has been going is quite an accomplishment for our seniors.”

Hawes and junior Kelly Haggerty (3 goals, 2 assists) led Ohio State with five points each. Markwordt and Maghan Beaudrault had three points each, while Jayme Beard, Olivia Annalora nd Gabby Capuzzi scored single goals. Gilwee finished with 12 saves.

Seniors Kristen Gilwee, Libby Graf, Kendall Gysin, Rachel Hawes, Mallory Mayhew and Margaret Prunte were honored in ceremonies before the match. The Buckeyes conclude the regular season with road matches at Detroit Mercy (Tues., April 14), Penn State (Sun., April 19) and No. 1 Northwestern (Weds., April 22). The ALC Tournament begins April 30 at Penn State.
