Freshman earns honor from, ties program record for points in a game

COLUMBUS, Ohio Alayna Markwordt, a freshman on the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team, has been named’s Rookie of the Week announced Monday. The midfielder tallied a career and program-best 11 points on six goals and five assists in the Buckeyes’ 22-12 upset of No. 18 Johns Hopkins last Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

With 11 points, Markwordt tied the Ohio State program record for points in a single game, joining Mara Simpson (1996-99) who set the mark in 1996 and Kristen Slahor (2005-08) who hit the mark a season ago. The rookie’s six goals in a single game ranks her second on the Ohio State all-time list, becoming the 10th student-athlete to do so.

The Woodbine, Md., native is tied for the team lead in goals with 17 and is second with 27 points in five contests. Markwordt also is tied for the team lead in gamewinning and man-up tallies with a pair of each.

After being held scoreless vs. Notre Dame, Markwordt posted her second six-point outing of the season vs. St. Bonaventure March 1. The nutrition major opened her Ohio State career scoring three goals and an assist at American (Feb. 13) before tallying a 4-2-6 line at George Washington (Feb. 15).

Ohio State plays host to in-state foe Cincinnati at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, its third-consecutive home contest. Admission is free of charge for all Buckeye women’s lacrosse games.
