Williams Earns Second Team Pocock All-America Honors

June 15, 2017

Columbus, Ohio Stephanie Williams of the Ohio State women’s rowing team was named a Pocock Second Team All-American on Tuesday night, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced.

For Williams, it marks the second time in as many years that she has been named an All-American. In 2016, she was named a Pocock First Team All-American for aiding the First Varsity Eight in winning a national title.

In 2017, Williams’ senior leadership provided a steady dose of composure and strength for the 1V8. The Australia native raced as a member of the 1V8 at all seven regattas during the season leading the boat to a 43-7 record (10-5 W/L by race). The 1V8 closed out the season with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

The highlight of the year for the 1V8 was the Big Ten Championships. Entering the final race of the regatta trailing Michigan, Kruse and the 1V8 faced a must-win situation if they hoped to extend Ohio State’s streak of conference titles to five in a row. With its back up against the wall, the 1V8 prevailed with a 2.4 second victory over the Wolverines to claim the conference crown.

Williams’ career comes to a close with some impressive accolades. Rowing as a member of the 1V8 at all four NCAA Championships of her career, Williams was a crucial element in helping the 1V8 win three national titles in a row (2014, 2015, 2016), a feat that had never been accomplished in NCAA history. Those national titles in 2014 and 2015 propelled Ohio State to its second and third team national titles in program history as well.

The four-time Big Ten team and boat champion, two-time All-American, two-time First Team CRCA All-Central Region selection and four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten selection will be racing alongside her teammates one last time this weekend across the pond at the historic Henley Women’s Regatta this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (June 16-18).
