Buckeyes give Bulldogs early scare but UMD pulls away with three unanswered goals
DULUTH, Minn. On this Friday the 13th, the Ohio State women’s hockey team gave No. 3/4 Minnesota Duluth an early scare with a 1-all score after the first period, but the Bulldogs pulled away with three goals in the next two periods to hand the Buckeyes a 4-1 loss at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center in Duluth, Minn.

Ohio State moves to 8-20-3 overall with a 6-17-2-2 record in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Minnesota Duluth is 20-7-4 and 15-6-4-1 in the league.

The teams exchanged goals in the first period for a 1-all tie at the first intermission. The Bulldogs scored first at 10:52 when Jocelyne Larocque fired a puck in from the blue line and Sara O’Toole redirected it from low in the slot into the back of the net. Haley Irwin tallied the second assist on the goal.

Ohio State responded at 15:26 when it capitalized on a power play opportunity. From the point, sophomore defenseman Shannon Reilly blasted a shot that was tipped in by freshman forward Melissa Feste from the left side of the net. Fellow rookie Kim Theut earned the second assist.

Minnesota Duluth added two goals in the second period for a 3-1 lead after two. The Bulldogs regained the lead at 5:10, scoring just as the Buckeyes returned to even-strength after a penalty. Irwin scored on a wrist shot from the right side of the net off a pass by Larocque.

Elin Holmlov then scored at 15:25 when she froze OSU goalie Liana Bonanno and scored from the right side. Holmlov was assisted by O’Toole and Jaime Rasmussen.

The Bulldogs tallied a goal in the third period for a 4-1 final. At 8:32, Rasmussen scored from the left faceoff circle with passes by Heidi Pelttari and Laura Frindfinnson.

Overall, Minnesota Duluth had a 28-13 advantage in shots. The Buckeyes were 1-of-6 on the power play while UMD was 1-of-4.

Bonanno made a total of 25 saves and moves to 7-15-2 this season. The Bulldogs’ Johanna Ellison had 12 saves and is 8-1-1.

The Buckeyes had some Friday the 13th bad luck moments in the game:

Senior Hayley Klassen missed a wide-open net on a shorthanded breakaway 2-on-0 with freshman Laura McIntosh.
Freshman Natalie Spooner turned to wrap the puck around the boards behind the OSU net and fired a slap shot into the gut of Shannon Reilly.
Sophomore Christina Mancuso went into the boards ankle-first at full speed. Thankfully, after a yell, she got up and returned for her next shift. She later was hooked at center ice and landed on her head. Ouch.

The Buckeyes and Bulldogs conclude their series with a 7 p.m. Saturday at the DECC. A live scoring link for the game is available on the women’s hockey schedule page on
