Bonhomme with Canada, Chesson with the U.S. and Laaksonen with Finland win preliminary round groups

COLUMBUS, Ohio The three former Ohio State women’s hockey defensemen competing in the 2009 IIHF World Women’s Championship helped their teams win each of their groups after preliminary action concluded Monday in Hameenlinna, Finland. Lisa Chesson with Team USA, Tessa Bonhomme with Team Canada and Emma Laaksonen with Team Finland finished atop Groups A, B and C, respectively.

Canada, Finland and the United States, the top three seeded teams heading into the international competition second only to the Olympics, were realigned into a single group (Group D) and will play each other in a qualifying round to determining the seedings for the medal games. The three teams will play each other once and action began with an 8-0 Canada victory over Finland Wednesday.

Finland and the United States play Thursday at noon (EDT) and archrivals Canada and the U.S., in what is a likely preview of the championship game, will face each other Friday at noon. Bronze and gold-medal games will be contended Sunday and all three former Buckeyes will be playing for medals.

Chesson has a goal and two assists in Team USA’s first two games with a plus-6 rating. Bonhomme has an assist in each of Canada’s three games and a plus-5 mark. Laaksonen, captain of Team Finland, has yet to tally a point and has an even plus-minus rating.

The Team USA games will be available to watch online via Universal Sports (
