No. 27 Buckeyes conclude second round with four golfers in the Top 25

COLUMBUS, Ohio With one round left to play, the Ohio State women’s golf team is in seventh place at the 2009 NCCA Central Regional in Columbus. Competing on their own par 72, 6,246-yard Scarlet Course, the Buckeyes fired a season-low team score of 293 Friday for a 36-hole total of 599 (+23).

After narrowly missing a trip to the nationals last year, Ohio State aims to hold on to their Top 8 standing for a trip to the NCAA championships, May 19-22 in Baltimore, Md.

“I am really proud of the team,” head coach Therese Hession said. “This was our best round of the season and we were really focused on what we were doing. We need to pick up where we where we left off and get out of the gate fast to have a solid final round.”

For the second-consecutive day, UCLA remained atop the 21-team field after firing a team score of 290 to total 2-under 574. The Bruins are the lone team under par and have a 10 stroke lead over the rest of the field. Carding rounds of 69-70, UCLA is led by Stephanie Kono and Maria Jose Uribe who are tied for first place.

The Buckeyes, who moved up three places in the second round, are led by junior co-captain Emma Jandel. The Dayton native was 2-over on both the front and back nine for a round of 76 and, with a total of 5-over 149, is tied for 16th heading into the final round.

A stroke back from Jandel is freshman Big Ten Freshman of the Year Vicky Villanueva. She climbed 37 spots to tie for 21st. After a rocky first round of 78, the rookie from Argentina improved in the second day with an even round of 72, which included four birdies.

Tying for 24th at 151 are senior co-captain Gemma Webster and sophomore In Hong Lim. After opening with two bogies on her first nine holes, Webster came back with two birdies to break even at 72. Lim, who won the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational in Scarlet in April, had a second round score of 1-over 73.

Rounding out the OSU lineup is senior Jessica Hauser. Notching 14 pars on the day, Hauser shot her second round of 77 to tie for 53rd.

The NCAA Central Regional concludes Saturday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. The Buckeyes will begin play from the No. 1 tee between 9-9:40 a.m.  Live scoring for the event is available at
