COLUMBUS, Ohio – A pair of student-athletes from the Ohio State women’s volleyball team earned Big Ten recognition on Tuesday. Senior Ashley Wenz picked up All-Big Ten honorable mention laurels while classmate Kalisha Goree was a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.
This marks the 31st consecutive season in which at least one Buckeye has garnered postseason honors from the league office. Thirty-six different OSU student-athletes have been tabbed as All-Big Ten selections a total of 77 times since 1983.
The duo helped guide the Buckeyes to three straight NCAA Sweet 16s from 2014-2016. They had a hand in 85 Ohio State victories over the past four seasons, including 42 Big Ten wins.
Wenz had the best showing of her career during her senior campaign. She started 29 of 31 matches in 2017 on her way to 333 kills, 137 digs and 81 blocks. The right side hitter ranked 14th in Big-Ten only matches behind 3.29 kills per set.
Goree was selected for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award; given to student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior while holding a good academic standing and demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The defensive specialist played in 107 matches and recorded 343 digs. She also twice earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades.
