Big Ten Chamionships Day 3 Results

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s swimming team is now in third place after Day 3 of the 2021 Big Ten Conference Swimming & Diving championships, which are being contested at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State University.

A surge from defending Big Ten champion Michigan and Indiana was anticipated today with the Wolverines placing eight swimmers in championship final lanes and 15 total scoring swimmers with Indiana having six in finals and 14 total scorers. Ohio State had one and eight, respectively.

The Buckeyes scored just about every point they could in their races tonight and now just 19 points separates the top three teams. The resulting points tonight enabled Michigan to move into the Day 3 lead with 767 points with Indiana second with 763.5 points and Ohio State third with 748 points. The Top 5 is rounded out by Purdue and Wisconsin with 483.5 and 444 points, respectively.

Ohio State secured all that it could from Justin Fleagle, Semuede Andreis and Chachi Gustafson in the opening race of the evening – the 100 butterfly – enabling the Buckeyes to hold onto their lead. Fleagle won the B Final with a personal best of 46.63 with Andreis 10th in 47.70. Gustafson won the C Final in a personal best time of 47.22.

Indiana grabbed the lead after event No. 2 of the evening – the 400 individual medley. Ohio State’s Thomas Watkins was 13th with a personal best time of 3:48.43 while Jonathan Edwards and Matthew Magness also swam to personal bests out of the C Final. Edwards was 18th in 3:50.11 and Magness was 20th in 3:51.19.

Paul Delakis, the Big Ten champ last evening in the 200 individual medley, claimed a second Big Ten championship, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:32.28. Shaw Satterfield registered his personal best in the event, taking 11t in 1:35.50. Michigan had four swimmers in the finals and their combined points total were enough to move the Wolverines into the team lead heading into Friday.

Friday will be a rather large day in the pool, with four more events including the 200 freestyle relay to cap the evening. Individual event swims will take place in the 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and the 200 butterfly. The finals begin at 6:30 p.m.
