COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (21-11 overall) women’s volleyball team lost 0-3 (24-30, 25-30, 27-30) to No. 2 seed Stanford (30-4) in a NCAA Pacific Regional Semifinal played at Stanford. The Buckeyes, seeded 15th, entered the match without four-year starting setter Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) who suffered a knee injury Thursday in practice. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) scored match-high of 19 kills and three aces for the Buckeyes while Stanford’s Ogonna Nnamani (So., Normal,Ill.)had a team-high 16 kills with Logan Tom (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) adding 13 for the Cardinal.

Game one saw nine ties, the last at 12. Stanford opened a 15-12 lead off a Buckeye error, an Ashley Ivy (Sr., Arlington, Texas) kill and a block by Nnamani. Leading by three at 24-21, two Nnamani kills pushed the lead to 26-21. A Buckeye kills by Heather Whalen (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) and one by Nnamani moved the score to 27-22. A Cardinal block by Sara McGee (Jr., Davis, Calif.) and a Stanford error advanced the score to 28-23. Errors by both teams moved the score to 29-24. A Buckeye attack error ended the game at 30-24, Stanford. The Cardinal hit .444 for the game to .175 for Ohio State.

After a two-all tie, Stanford scored four straight points to take a 6-2 lead. Trailing 13-9, Ohio State cut the Stanford lead to two at 13-11 with a Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) kill and a Cardinal error. At 15-13, two Nnamani kills made it 17-13. A Cardinal error and two Tom kills opened up a 19-14 Stanford lead. At 20-15, two Buckeye errors made it 22-15. A Stiling kill and an OSU error made it 23-16. OSU put together a four-point run to close to within three at 23-20. The Buckeyes started the run with a Stiling-Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden). An Andersson ace, a Stanford error and a Stiling kill completed the run. After an error by both teams (24-21), two Nnamani kills and an Ivy-McGee block made it 26-21. Gordon’s first kill of the game made it 27-22. An Ivy-McGee block made it 28-22. Two Gordon kills made it 28-24. A Tom kill made it 29-24. A Cardinal error made it 29-25. McGee closed out the match with a kill at 30-25. Stanford hit .293 for the game to .100 for Ohio State.

After six early ties in game three, Stanford broke a nine-all tie with a Nnamani kill, a Lindsey Yamasaki (Sr., Oregon City, Oregon) and a block by Tom to take a 12-9 lead. A Gordon kill stopped the run and a Cardinal error made it 12-11. Two Buckeye errors made it 14-11. A Cardinal error made it 14-12. At 15-13, two ace serves by Gordon tied the game at 15. A Buckeye error and a Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) kill tied the game at 16. A Buckeye error and a Nnamani block made it 18-16, Stanford. An Andersson kill and an Ivy-McGee block made it 19-17. Kills by McGee and Gordon made it 20-18. A Nnamani kill, an OSU error and a McGee-Ivy block gave Stanford a 23-18 lead. Errors by both teams made it 24-19. A Gordon kill cut the lead to 24-20. A block by Tom and Anna Robinson (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) gave the Cardinal a 25-20 lead. OSU responded with a Gordon kill, a Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) and Draeger block and a Gordon ace serve to cut the margin to 25-23. A kill by Tom made it 26-23. A Gordon kill and a Draeger-Stiling block cut the Cardinal lead to one at 26-25. An Ivy kill made it 27-25. Draeger’s kill made it 27-26. Nnamani, with a kill, made it 28-26. Stiling responded with a kill at 28-27. A McGee kill set match point at 29-27. Yamasaki, with a kill, closed the match with a 30-27 game three win.

The Cardinal hit .379 for the game to .229 for Ohio State. OSU’s Gordon reached double-figure kills (10) in the game, her sixth double-figure kill game of the season.

Stanford hit .361 for the match to .165 for Ohio State. The Cardinal had a 47-46 advantage in kills. The Buckeyes had an eight to two margin in ace serves. OSU gave up eight service errors to seven for Stanford. Ohio State had a 36-32 margin in digs with OSU’s Gordon and Stanford’s Nnamani sharing match-high honors with nine digs each. The Cardinal out blocked Ohio State, 17 to three with McGee recording a match-high eight blocks (two solo, six assists) for the Cardinal. OSU’s Whalen had 38 assists in the match to 39 for Stanford’s Robinson

Stanford advances to the Pacific Regional Championship match against Arizona (20-11), a 3-1 (32-30, 34-32, 28-30, 30-19) winner over Minnesota (3-26), Friday evening at 9 p.m. PT.
