Vocel Named Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week, Again


COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Matej Vocel was once again dominant last week in leading No. 5 Ohio State to a pair of victories and has been named the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Vocel and the Buckeyes won the ITA Kickoff Weekend regional in Chapel Hill, N.C., with 4-0 sweeps of Arizona State and No 17 North Carolina.

The Prague, Czech Republic, native went a combined 4-0 with a pair of ranked wins. He lost just nine games in four singles sets, beating No. 118 Max McKennon of Arizona State and rolling Benjamin Sigouin on his home court 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, he lost just one game in two doubles wins, beating the Arizona State team 6-0 and blitzing the No. 20 ranked team of Casey Kania and Logan Zapp of North Carolina 6-1.

On the year, Vocel is 15-3 in singles with nine wins over ranked opponents. He is ranked No. 5 in the singles rankings and he and Cash are the top-ranked doubles in the country, holding a 17-2 record.

Vocel and the Buckeyes have a big weekend on tap as they will host No. 1 Tennessee on Friday night and then host No. 6 Virginia on Sunday.
