Tournament Website

COLUMBUS, Ohio – What a run it was for Ohio State’s Matej Vocel and Robert Cash. The duo battled into a third-set tiebreaker at the NCAA Doubles Championship before ultimately finishing runner-up to the Texas team of Richard Ciamarra and Cleeve Harper.

Both teams opened the match with a break and then each held serve through 5-5. A huge break from Vocel and Cash allowed them to take a 6-5 lead and then Buckeyes then won their third consecutive ga,e to take the first set 7-5.

The Buckeyes again broke to open the second set, however, Texas quickly fought back and took a 3-1 lead. Vocel and Cash responded by winning two straight tying the second set 3-3. The Longhorns kept the pressure on and defended the Buckeye onslaught by winning the second set 6-4 to send the match to a tiebreaker.

In the super-breaker, the Buckeyes took a quick 3-0 lead. Texas bounced back at a similar pace and tied it 3-3. The Longhorns kept the momentum and boosted their lead to 7-4, until Vocel and Cash answered by tying the set 7-7. However, in following the tiebreak set’s back and forth nature, the Longhorns won three-consecutive points to clinch the title 10-7.

It was a tremendous year for Vocel and Cash. They opened the fall by winning both the ITA All-American Championship and the ITA Fall National Championship. In the spring, they spent a total of 21 weeks ranked No. 1 and earned All-American status at the end of the regular season. The duo had 18 wins over ranked opponents and finished the year with a remarkable record of 37-5.

Vocel and Cash was the fourth Buckeye doubles team to reach the championship match. Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola won the title in 2012, while Peter Kobelt and Kevin Metka finished runner-up in 2014 and Mikael Torpegaard and Martin Joyce finished runner-up in 2018.
