COLUMBUS, Ohio – Vicky Villanueva, a junior on the Ohio State women’s golf team, was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. It is the first weekly honor of her career and the first for a Buckeye this season.
Villanueva was the top finisher for the Buckeyes in second place at 2-over 212 at the SunTrust Gator Women’s Golf Invitational (March 4-5). Her finish lifted the No. 31 Ohio State to third in the 17-team field that competed in the two-day, 54-hole event held on the par 70, 6,002-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida.
The Chacabuco, Argentina, native carded a round-one score of 2-over 72 that included back-to-back birdies on hole Nos. 6 and 7. She followed with a career-low round of 3-under 67 in the second round to conclude the first day with a 1-under 139 after 36 holes. She notched a final round of 73 to finish with a career-low 54-hole score of 212.
Villanueva fired seven birdies on day one and three on day two to lead the tournament in total birdies with ten.
The Buckeyes return to action March 25-27 when they spend their spring break at the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
