Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State freshman thrower Amarachi Ukabam (Creve Couer, Mo./ Marquette), the 2003 Big Ten and NCAA Mideast Regional champion in the discus, claimed the discus title at the 2003 Pan American Junior Championships Friday evening in Bridgewater, Barbados.

Ukabam used her first attempt of 52.05 meters (170-8) to best the field as she edged fellow U.S. competitor Beth Malory (50.91 meters) to claim the championship for the United States.

Ukabam, who entered the as the favorite in the competition, adds the Pan Am junior title to an outstanding 2003 season, where she exploded onto the collegiate scene as she was named the Big Ten Female Freshman of the Year.

Fellow thrower and All-American Dan Taylor (Jr., Middlefield, Ohio/ Berkshire) will compete in the Pan American Senior Games in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. Taylor will vie for a title in the shot put Tuesday, Aug. 5.
