U.S. Collegiate Championships Up Next For the Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized (artistic) swimming team will compete to defend its 2022 national title this week at the 2023 U.S. Collegiate National Championships set for March 23-25 at FMC Natatorium in Westmont, Ill.

Buckeyes at the U.S. Collegiate Championships

Ohio State has won 33 national titles in program history and four of the last five championships. In addition to the team titles, the Buckeyes have won 17 solo, 27 duet, 28 trio and 33 team routine titles.

Last year, Ohio State swept the routine titles and earned wins in A and B Figures to take home the overall institution championship. Returners who competed in national championship routines include solo and duet champion Nikki Dzurko, trio champions Emily Armstrong and Ruby Remati and team champions Armstrong, Dzurko, Heffernan, Paige Hopper and Remati. Armstrong and Oliva Malloy also won the A and B Figures, respectively.

Ohio State head coach and six-time U.S. Collegiate Coach of the Year Holly Vargo Brown has coached the Buckeyes to five national championships in her tenure at the helm of the program. She has been a part of 26 of the Buckeyes’ national titles as either a student-athlete or coach.

Vargo Brown also has national champion experience assisting her this year as assistant coach Monica Velasquez-Stiak is a four-time U.S. Collegiate All-American for the Buckeyes and helped the team to three national titles in her career (2015, 2017, 2018) and earned four individual titles as well.

Schedule of Events

Competition begins Thursday with solo, duet and trio preliminary competition. Friday features technical and team preliminary competition. Finals will be competed on Saturday for all routine categories.

Last Time Out

Ohio State won the North Regional Championship meet with a team score of 105. In technical competition, Armstrong won A Figures (81.8797) and Victoria Carlson won B Figures (72.8673). Dzurko was victorious in solo again, this time winning the category with a score of 82.9750. Armstrong and Remati took first in duet (82.0167) and Dzurko, Hopper and Spott finished first in trio (81.8833). The Scarlet team of Armstrong, Dzurko, Homoelle, Hopper, Malloy, Reverie Nedde, Remati and Spott earned first-place (83.2000) to close out the meet.
