COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lap One of the 2019 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association schedule concludes this week when McKendree University (6-7, 3-3 MIVA) pays a visit to St. John Arena. Ohio State (5-11, 1-5 MIVA) hosts the Bearcats Friday (March 1) at 7 p.m. ET and Sunday (March 3) for a 2 p.m. showdown to close out the first half of MIVA play.

HISTORY WITH THE BEARCATS
McKendree joined the MIVA in 2015 and has faced the Buckeyes twice every regular season since, adding a third annual meeting in the 2016 conference tournament semifinals. Ohio State has been victorious in each of the previous nine showdowns, including four sweeps.

BEYOND THE BLOCK O – MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
OhioStateBuckeyes.com’s Miles McQuinn has been behind the scenes of Ohio State Men’s Volleyball to pull the curtain back a bit and offer Buckeye Nation insight into the three-time national championship program. Two episodes have been released thus far (see below) with more to come. A must-watch for all Buckeye fans.

LEESON TO COMPETE IN THE WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
Blake Leeson is one of 12 individuals picked to represent Team USA in the World University Games (July 3-14) in Napoli, Italy.

LEESON AMONG NATION’S MOST EFFICIENT ATTACKERS
Speaking of Mr. Leeson, he is attacking at a .511 clip (112-16-188). With 188 attempts in 58 sets played, his 3.24 attacks per set average is just below the statistical minimum to be included in the NCAA rankings (3.30 attacks/set). With four more swings, Leeson’s .511 hitting percentage would rank fourth nationally (it’s also slots him fourth all-time in Ohio State history for a single season).

WHO’S THE NEW GUY(S)?
As injuries have ravaged the Buckeye roster this season, a large contingency of fresh faces have been called on to provide a heavy work load. A total of seven first-year Buckeyes (five freshmen, two sophomore transfers) have seen significant action thus far and have produced 52% of the team’s assists (334), 35% of the blocks (68), 28% of the service aces (21), 28% of the points (240.0), 27% of the kills (184) and 25% of the digs (119).

ELDER STATESMAN
No active player in D I-II NCAA Men’s Volleyball has played in more matches than Blake Leeson. The fifth-year Buckeye senior has logged 113 matches and is tied with UC Irvine’s Scott Stadick for the most blocks among active players with 359. His .462 attacking efficiency ranks second best.

In terms of Buckeye lore, Leeson has made an impression in the OSU record books as well. He enters the week ranked top-12 in hitting percentage (4th, .462), solo blocks (t-7th, 61), block assists (12th, 298) and total blocks (12th, 359).

HALL OF FAME HANSON
Pete Hanson will be among a group of 25 volleyball legends and stars of the sport who will be inducted into the USA Volleyball Hall of Fame as presented at the Dorothy C. Boyce Banquet on May 22 in Columbus, Ohio.

Enshrinement is nothing new for the Ohio State head coach, previously inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame (2017) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame (2015).
