Trio Earn Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Honors

2020-21 Ohio State Big Ten Distinguished Scholars

COLUMBUS, Ohio –Three members of the Ohio State men’s soccer program were honored Thursday as 2021 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.

Redshirt senior Samuel Buzzas, who has elected to return for another year with the program, and seniors Matteo Bennati and Mitch Bergman made the annual academic list for their efforts in the classroom.

A record 232 Ohio State student-athletes were recognized by the Big Ten Conference with Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Awards. The previous high for Ohio State was 164 in 2019-20.

Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must have earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher for a student-athlete’s academic career. In all, the B1G honored 2,132 student-athletes across the conference as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for 2020-21.

Buzzas, who completed a redshirt senior season in the 2021 Spring season, spent two years at Xavier before playing the last two seasons in Columbus.

The defender from Bend, Oregon, has played 25 games for the Buckeyes with a pair of goals to his credit.

Bennati, a midfielder from Genova, Italy, played 29 games for the Buckeyes following a transfer from Belmont. He ended his career in Columbus with three goals and two assists to his credit.

Bergman, a defender from Canal Winchester, Ohio, played 58 games in his Ohio State career. He scored a pair of goals to go with an assist.

Ohio State finished the 2021 Spring Season with a 3-6-1 record. Ohio State will open the 2021 Fall schedule Aug. 27 against Memphis in the annual Wolstein Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

The 2021 Spring roster produced 26 Ohio State Scholar Athletes while freshmen Laurence Wootton and Parker Grinstead were recognized as members of the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. Wootton garnered Big Ten Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten honors as well.
