COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s lacrosse goalie Tony Russo (So., Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) has earned Great Western Lacrosse League Player of the Week honors, the conference today announced.
Russo posted 14 saves to lead the Buckeyes to an upset victory over then-No. 17 ranked Cornell Saturday, May 6 in Columbus. Russo allowed seven goals in the win, including just three in the final 19 minutes of the game. He had a save percentage of 71.
In his first season as Ohio State’s starting goalie, Russo ended the season with a save percentage of 55. He stopped 162 shots while allowing 131 goals.
Russo’s play helped propel the Buckeyes back into the national rankings. The Cornell game was the first time in five weeks OSU was not ranked, but with the help of Russo the Buckeyes end their season at No. 20 in the nation. OSU was 8-6 overall and 2-3 in the GWLL.
