Three Top 10 Finishers Lead Buckeyes in Roy Griak Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s cross country teams raced in the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by Minnesota in Minneapolis Friday. With Top 10 finishes from Addie Engel, Daniella Santos and Andrea Kuhn, the No. 25-ranked women finished fifth as a team.

The trio of Engel, Santos and Kuhn has been in the Top 10 in each of the Buckeyes’ first three races. Engel placed second Friday, just 5.9 seconds back of race winner Emily Venters of team champion Utah in 20:39.1. Santos was seventh in a time of 21:04.1 and Kuhn was 10th in 21:12.3. Akemi Von Scherr and Morgan Schmitt rounded out the Buckeye Top 5. The Ohio State women were fifth of 20 teams, which had 224 runners complete the 6K.

Nathaniel Tamminga led the Ohio State men, with Zubin Jha, Ivan Slepykan, Sean Carney and Kaleb Marin in the Buckeye Top 5. Wisconsin was first among the 17 teams in the men’s 8K.

Quoting Head Coach Sara Mason Vergote

“Today was a step in the right direction for the men. We’ve been dealing with some illness but the goal was to execute the middle of the race and they did that. I was especially happy with how Nathaniel and Ivan ran today and am excited for them to race in Chicago next weekend.

“The women had a great day. I think we proved we belong in the Top 25 in the country and we look forward to continuing to show that over the next two months.”
